Why do they put the "." on a version if they are not going to use it? I would argue that .NET 2.0 really should be .NET 1.2

If they wanted to rename WinFX, calling it .NET 2.5 would be better than .NET 3.0. So when the next major release of the .NET Framework is released will it be called .NET 3.5? As you said, what's the point in using the "." if Microsoft isn't going to use it.
